Kariann Price Designs, Art Jewelry Boutique
If you haven't noticed yet, a new sense of style has come into DR. Quick, off the top of your head, how many boutiques are there currently in our little town of DR? Well, if you've been driving down Main Street recently, you know there is at least one. A new Art Jewelry Boutique was opened on July 25th by Kariann Price. For those of you who have passed by the brightly lit windows or who have already entered her sparkling shop, you already know that a new touch of class has come to Main Street.
Kariann, born in Hawaii and raised in Virginia, began making art jewelry when she was living by the beaches of Southern Maine. She started by collecting sea glass from the wind-swept beaches of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. These gifts of nature became the starting point for Kariann's artistic creations. She uses a process called cold connecting to turn the gems into strikingly beautiful necklaces, earrings and bracelets. At first she designed her creations mainly for herself and her family. But whenever she was out in public with her jewelry on, people would ask her where they could buy her creations. After her initial sea glass collections became popular, Kariann incorporated a variety of additional materials into her jewelry including vintage pieces, stained glass, Swarovski crystals, pearls, and other semi-precious gems.
Her artistic vision grew to the point where she now has fourteen separate jewelry collections, including the Da Vinci collection (made with hand-cut and beveled stained glass), the Framed Mosaic collection (framed art on a chain), and the Vintage Lace collection (vintage pieces laced onto a hand-woven choker necklace) among others.
In 2005, in order to be closer to their daughters who were attending college in NYC, Kariann and her husband moved to the Connecticut coast and settled in Deep River. She opened her "Deep River Rocks" studio on Book Hill Rd. and immediately felt at home with a host of new friends, many of whom have artistic pursuits. Kariann and her new friends formed an artist support group called the "Cove Connection". From there, she introduced her jewelry in several local art galleries including the Alva Gallery in New London, Riverside Press in Essex, Vivo in Old Saybrook and the Brick gallery in Essex. Her jewelry has also been displayed at the Westport Craft show, Gallery 225 and Bond 07 by Selima in Manhattan and the West Hartford Art & Craft show.
Over the past year with her jewelry receiving an enthusiastic reception from New York City to the North Fork of Long Island, Kariann dreamed about having her own boutique. "I love making jewelry treasures for my clients, but I also love to interact with my clients, to help them choose what looks best on them and to see their joy when they look in the mirror", Kariann explained. In the meantime, she had fallen in love with her new home in Deep River and so she started to search out the best place for her new boutique. Since she and her husband had already made a habit of having an evening ice cream at the Main Street Sweet Shop, it was not by accident that she noticed that the flower shop on Main street had closed. Kariann thought "what could be better than to have a boutique right in the middle of my cute little town?".
Since it opened, Kariann's boutique has quickly become a fixture in downtown Deep River. From any direction on Main Street, her brightly lit windows and sparkling creations attract the visitor's eye.
Her boutique has some very special features including a "Wishbook" which allows clients to pick out a special gift for themselves, which can be purchased by a friend or loved one at a later date. Additionally, Kariann encourages her clients to bring in their favorite vintage pieces which she then incorporates into a more modern jewelry creation. The process of changing something old into something new and exciting involves Kariann and her client picking through trays of semi-precious gems, crystals and her extensive vintage collection to create a new piece of art jewelry.
Kariann's boutique has also become a place where people can purchase works of art created by local artists from Deep River: Lori Lenz (oils, watercolors and art jewelry, Jill Merola (photography), Janet Edgerton (mixed media), Gray Jacobic (oil paintings), Charlene Wilcox (pressed flower art), and Tricia Hamel (art jewelry); and Chester artists, Dan Dahlstrom (oil paintings) and Allison Woodward, also of Brooklyn NY, (art jewelry); and Pennsylvania artist, Phyllis Nathens (watercolor).
When you enter the boutique, you will always be greeted by Kariann's warm smile, but the most smiles were seen this past Saturday on Deep River Family Fun day when approximately one hundred children of Deep River were given free Mardi Gras necklaces by Kariann. "That's why I do this -- I love to see the smiles!".
